  1. 1924-1988. Pakistani general, in power from
  2. 1977 until his death, probably an
  3. assassination, in an aircraft explosion. He
  4. became army chief of staff 1976, led the
  5. military coup against Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto
  6. 1977, and became president 1978. Zia
  7. introduced a fundamentalist Islamic regime
  8. and restricted political activity. Zia was a
  9. career soldier from a middle-class Punjabi
  10. Muslim family. As army chief of staff, his
  11. opposition to the Soviet invasion of
  12. Afghanistan 1979 drew support from the USA,
  13. but his refusal to commute the death sentence
  14. imposed on Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was widely
  15. condemned. He lifted martial law 1985. The US
  16. Central Intelligence Agency is widely
  17. rumoured to have engineered his death.
